What the duo put together is some of the most diverse and versatile music every recorded. Often, their albums feature 3 or 4 different vocalists (as many as 6 on one album). Parsons doesn’t sing except through a Vocoder, and only on the first album (he would later sing many songs in his solo career) Woolfson’s first lead vocal didn’t come until their 5th album. The rest are all studio musicians, some of whom were hired to perform on just one album. Only two musicians (the core duo of Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, both on various keyboards, Parsons on guitar occasionally) appear consistently on every album. The Project is unusual for other reasons too. Are they progressive rock? Symphonic rock? Art rock? Pseudo-classical? They have only two “prog epics” to their name, on their first album Parsons himself has stated in interviews that he always considered the Project to be a pop band, not really a rock band at all. That, of course, is one of the issues that arise when discussing the Alan Parsons Project – they defy classification. When I participate in online polls today, I always count The Alan Parsons Project in my Top 5 bands of all time, as high as #3 depending on the sub-genre. I replaced both of those albums with CDs and all the other albums (through 1987’s Gaudi) with digital downloads many years later. I bought APP’s next two albums (1980’s The Turn Of A Friendly Card, 1982’s Eye In The Sky) on cassette. I didn’t realize that the Project had already made 4 albums by that point until the classmate mentioned earlier gave me a pair of homemade cassette tapes (an album on each side, edited slightly to fit on 30-minute-per-side tapes) containing those first four albums. But though I remembered hearing “I Wouldn’t Want To Be Like You” on the radio, I was otherwise completely unfamiliar with his work on the Project. His numerous other credits are along similar lines. I actually knew the name Alan Parsons from his earlier work as an engineer and producer, having worked with The Beatles on their last two albums and being the lead engineer on one of the greatest albums ever made, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon. I was introduced to the APP in 1979 by a college classmate. My Introduction to The Alan Parsons Project But does “best selling” make it their “best”? Read on to find out.

“Sirius” is the opening track on the Alan Parsons Project 1982 album Eye in the Sky, their best selling album.
